Match-up Overview
The 1-3-1 Washington Commanders are traveling to Santa Clara to take on the 5-0 49ers. These teams have faced each other 46 times and the 49ers have the lead in the all-time series 23-12-1. The last matchup was on December 31, 2023 and was a 27-10 San Fran win. In the last 5 matchups between these teams, the 49ers are 3-2.
The Commanders are coming off of a tie against the Giants and have spent the last week as a target of heavy media scrutiny for how they managed the end of game situation. This week, they are trying to flip the narrative and pull off a huge upset against an undefeated 49ers team. The Commanders have an opportunity to be the only NFC East team to win this week, which would put them right back in the mix for the division.
Much will depend on the performance of the offense this week. Washington is currently averaging 23 points per game, which is 17th in the NFL. They are primarily built to run the ball and are averaging 139 yards per game, which is 6th. This is most built on a stable of running backs and the legs of their QBs. Tonight, they will be without their leading rusher, Bill Crosskey-Merritt, and will have to rely on guys like Rachaad White and Austin Ekeler to run. They of course can use the legs of QB Jayden Daniels, who just ran for over 100 yards against the Giants last week. Daniels has missed a few games, and the offensive production has suffered in his absence. The team is averaging 187 yards per game, which is 24th in the league. It will be a tough matchup tonight for this offense overall as they face a stout 49ers defense that does not allow that many yards or points.
The defense for the Commanders have been allowing 29.8 points per game, which is 30th in the league. If they want to have any shot of winning tonight, the defense will need to step up against one of the best offenses in the league. the glaring weakness for the defense has been their ability to defend the pass. They are allowing 255 yards per game, which is 29th in the league. Against the run, they are allowing 95 yards per game, which is 8th in the NFL. Again, if the Commanders are going to win this game, their defense will need to play complementary ball with their offense and keep the 49ers off of the scoreboard.
The 49ers are in the conversation for the “best team in ball”. They are 5-0 and are seemingly clicking on all cylinders. On offense, they are averaging 30.8 points per game, which is 3rd in the league. Their QB, Brock Purdy, is an early MVP candidate and has this offense operating with very high efficiently. Purdy has thrown for 1196 yards, 13 TDs, and 2 interceptions. He is 3rd in the league in TD passes and 1st in the league in QBR. As a whole, the pass offense is averaging 236 yards per game, which is 13th in the league. They will be without Deebo Samuel and a fully healthy Mike Evans tonight. That means that they will rely on targets like George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey. CMC is the leading rusher for this team with 286 yards and 5 TDs. He splits carries with Kaelon Black who has 136 yard on the season. As a whole, they are averaging 128 yards per game, which is 8th in the league. Tonight, they will take on a porous Washington defense that should present plenty of opportunities to put up big numbers.
Despite injuries to key players like Nick Bosa, the 49ers defense has been one of the best units in the league. They are allowing 18.6 points per game, which is 3rd in the league. Teams have been struggling to move the ball at all against them. They are allowing 199 pass yards per game, which is 8th in the NFL. Against the run, they are allowing 97 yards per game, which is ranked 10th. They will face a Commanders team that has been fairly inconsistent so the 49ers should have the edge.

Best Bet Background – Terry McLaurin Receiving Yards over 49.5
I am expecting the 49ers to be leading throughout the game which means that the Commanders will be passing in late game situations. The 49ers have been pretty stingy against the pass, so there might be limited opportunities for this offense to move the ball. The Commanders will need to lean on their leading receiver Terry McLaurin. McLaurin has had a relatively quiet year for his standards but has started to find some consistency over the last few weeks. He has gone over this line in the past 3 straight games. The Commanders might be without Stefon Diggs tonight, which means that they will have to find ways to get Terry the ball. The 49ers run a man defense on about 11% of their snaps, which means that the Commanders should be able to find spots in the zone for Terry or find favorable matchups for him.
